Dear Jocelyn,

As you know, we put out a call about a month ago for adolescents and youth to submit essays for possible inclusion in the draft adolescent-friendly UNDRIP. We haven’t received a strong response, and I was therefore wondering if you might be able to suggest individuals whom we could contact directly about their interest and availability to submit an essay? We’d greatly appreciate any suggestions you could share with us.

Many thanks,

Nicola

Help a San woman from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) get to college

Ya'at'eeh. Hello. My name is Veronica. I am Dine (or Navajo) from the Eastern Agency of the Navajo researvation. A few years ago I was a Fulbright Scholar to Botswana and conducted research on San cultural tourism in the village of D'Kar and the settlement of Kaputura.

The San peoples are Indigenous Peoples in Southern Africa, living predominantly in Botswana, Namibia, and South Africa. While I was working on my research, I became good friends with my research assistant, Bihela. Bihela is from the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and is a trailblazer for San peoples in education. He graduated from the University of Botswana with a Master's in Development Studies.

Recently, Bihela asked me to join him in raising money for a young San woman, Gakedumele. Gakedumele has an amazing life story as a trailblazer for San women in education. Her dream is to go to college and become a social worker. I started this campaign to raise $1500 for her because of my passion to see more San/Indigenous Peoples, especially women, get a college education. I am honored to support Gakedumele in achieving her dreams. I hope after reading her story below that you can support her too.

Her Story

Gakedumele Mokgwambe was born in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) of Botswana in 1985, in a small settlement called Molapo where a great leader of the San peoples, Mr. Roy Sesena, was also born. Like all little girls born in the CKGR she learned to gather wild fruits with her grandmother and mother to feed her family.

Gakedumele has a commitment to education.

In 1994, Gakedumele Mokgwambe started her primary school at D'Kar Boarding School in a village far from home because there was no school inside the CKGR for her to attend. However, she did not stay in the village of D'Kar for long. In 1998, when her parents were relocated out of the CKGR to a settlement called New Xade, she went to live with them again and completed her primary education in 2000.

The following year, Gakedumele was forced to leave home once again. She enrolled in Itekeng Junior Secondary School in the township of Gantsi. Despite the hardships she faced being away from home, she earned her junior certificate and in 2004 she went on to Gantsi Senior Secondary and graduated with a Botswana General Certificate in Secondary Education. In Botswana, very few San students, especially San women, complete their secondary education for various reasons; yet Gakedumele stayed committed to her education and became a graduate.

Gakedumele has a passion for helping her people.

After graduating from Senior Secondary School, Gakedumele returned to New Xade and worked with a Peace Corps volunteer from the United States giving workshops that taught young girls life skills. Afterwards, Gakedumele worked for Kumku Trust, a San NGO based in D'Kar Botswana, as a research assistant. Then she joined the Department of Non-Formal Education and taught older people in New Xade who were illiterate how to read and write, as well as other life skills.

Gakedumele wants to continue helping her people in New Xade and believes she can do this by becoming a social worker. She was admitted into the Basa Bosele Training Institute in Gaborone, Botswana for an Advanced Certificate in Social Work. She will need to start the program in March 2012 and will finish in 2013.

Your Impact

In Botswana, many San peoples like Gakedumele and her family are rural area dwellers that do not have the means to pay for higher education. Yet going on to higher education will not only change Gakedumele's life for the better, but also the lives of her family and community. It is Gakedumele's dream to go to college, become a social worker, and return to New Xade to meet the social service needs of her people. She is kindly appealing to anyone who can to financially help her make her dreams come true.

What She Needs

Gakedumele needs 10 800 Pula or roughly $1500 by the March 1, 2012. This money will cover her tuition and final examination fee. The rest of the fees, which include registration, travel, and books and supplies, is already being taken care of.

Other Ways You Can Help

Whether or not you can give, we would appreciate it if you can please share this campaign with people you know. Help us get the word out so that by March 1st, Gakedumele will be on her way to college!

Thank you!

Hello family & friends!

I'm writing to let you know about 'Support an Indigenous Woman', a campaign I started with a friend of mine that I believe will make a difference in someone's life. As many of you know, I spent some time in Botswana as a Fulbright Scholar. I met many people who were welcoming and helpful, and really showed this Native girl a good time.  I am forever grateful for all that they shared with me and the ways in which they touched my life. Starting this campaign is one way for me to give back. I hope you can help me make it happen.

Breaking News! Fresh move of Land Commission’s chairman to start illegal and one-sided hearing of land dispute cases in CHT

Breaking News!

Fresh move of Land Commission’s chairman to start illegal and one-sided hearing of land dispute cases in CHT

It is learnt from a letter sent to Deputy Commissions of three hill districts of Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) from Registrar of CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission that the Commission is going to start hearing of land dispute cases from 28 February 2012 at its head office in Khagarchari.

It is worth mentioning that the CHT Accord Implementation Committee in its 3rd meeting held in Khagrachari on 26 December 2010 postponed all activities of land commission including hearing of land dispute cases until and unless amendment of provisions of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission Act 2001 contradictory to the CHT Accord is made.

PCJSS, in a press release signed by its assistant information and publicity secretary Sajib Chakma on 26 February 2012, protested against the one-sided and illegal initiative to start hearing of land dispute cases by chairman of CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission, violating the decision of the CHT Accord Implementation Committee and before amendment of the CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission Act 2001. PCJSS opined that starting of hearing of land dispute cases is illegal and ill-motivated and so it would create difficulties in the CHT and also hinder toward amendment of CHT Land Dispute Resolution Commission Act 2001.

Hence, PCJSS urged to stop this one-sided and ill-motivated hearing of land dispute cases by the chairman of Land Commission. Otherwise, chairman of the Land Commission will be responsible for any unwanted situation in the CHT.

Please find letter of Land Commission for hearing of land dispute cases and PCJSS press release on this issue (both in Bangla).

It is mentionable that after assuming state power, the grand alliance government appointed retired Justice Khademul Islam Chowdhury as the chairman of the Land Commission in July 2009. After assuming in the office, Mr. Chowdhury started in a dramatic fashion. He undertook a lightning tour of the three hill districts soon after assuming in the office and convened meetings in three hill districts for exchange of views. He used the Deputy Commissioners (DCs) of the three hill district to issue letter calling upon the members to attend such opinion-sharing meeting which was totally irregular, as DCs are nobody of the Commission. The Land Commission Act provides that the secretary of the Commission shall convene the Land Commission meeting.

Secondly without convening any formal meeting of the Commission, the chairman unilaterally declared to conduct land survey in the CHT, though CHT Accord stipulates to conduct land survey in the CHT after completing the rehabilitation works and resolution of land diputes. Despite the huge protest from the all sections of the citizens including CHTRC and PCJSS and also three circle chiefs, the Chairman of the Commission continues his unilateral and controversial activities. In mid-July 2010 the secretary of Land Commission issued a notice to the CHT Affairs Ministry and Land Ministry to conduct cadastral survey in CHT soon; otherwise the ministries would be charged non-compliance with court order.

Even without decision of the Land Commission, Khademul Islam Chowdhury one-sidedly declared to start hearing to settle land disputes. He took up programme, in spite of protests by PCJSS and other organizations including civil society committee, to inaugurate hearing on cases of land disputes in Khagrachari on 27 December 2010. In a meeting held on 26 December 2010 in Khagrachari circuit house, CHT Accord Implementation Committee announced postponement of hearing on cases of land disputes at Khagrachari.

Indigenous peoples should be genuine partners in development

2012-02-09-kirkenesKirkenes, Norway 9 February 2012. In a keynote speech delivered in Kirkenes, Norway, Professor Anaya underlined the key developments that have taken place in recent decades aimed at safeguarding the rights of indigenous peoples, while calling for a new model of development in which indigenous peoples have the opportunity to be genuine partners, especially in the context of natural resource extraction taking place in or near their traditional territories.

The Special Rapporteur's speech was delivered at a conference on "Indigenous peoples, corporations, and the environment," which was organized by the Working Group of Indigenous Peoples of the Barents Euro-Arctic Regional BEAR). Los pueblos indígenas deben ser verdaderos participantes en el desarrollo

2012-02-09-kirkenesKirkenes, 9 de febrero 2012.
